How to Serve in Pickleball – Serving Method

The serve is a key aspect of pickleball strategy. Players must carefully consider the rules for pickleball serve and know where to place the serve to maximize their chances of winning the point.

Volley Serve

As soon as the ball is served, it must be done with an underhand stroke, and the ball and paddle must not meet above the waist when colliding with each other.

A good way to achieve this is to keep the point of contact of the paddle below the navel.

The tip of the paddle must not exceed the highest point of the wrist in height at the time when it is being used to serve. In a volley serve, the ball will be considered a fault if it is served overhand.

In order to get the most power from your serve and to hit your serve from the highest point possible, this type of serve is the best way to fulfill all these conditions and get more power.

Drop Serve

Essentially, it involves using one hand to toss the ball into the air while the other hand holding the paddle makes the paddle contact with the ball before the ball falls and bounces on the ground.

As a result, the ball can bounce before being served. Players can bounce the ball more than once, and they hit the ball however they wish.

It is also important to understand the rules for pickleball serve and know that typically, experts do not give the ball a bounce before serving it, instead hitting it immediately after dropping it from their hands.

As a beginner or intermediate player, this method would be suitable for you if you are looking to ensure that your serves are accurate and effective and you are following the rules for pickleball serve.

To be valid, a serve must completely clear the non-volley zone, which is a 7-foot area on each side of the court (otherwise known as the kitchen zone).

The serve would have to land on the opponent’s court diagonally opposite to the server’s court, and it would have to completely clear the non-volley zone and its line according to the rules for Pickleball serve.

Serving Sequence – Rules For Pickleball Serve

Players on the right side of the court serve the first shot of the pickleball game to the player who is diagonally opposite to him on the receiving court and receives the ball. The same applies to singles and doubles.

Eventually, the first server of each team will continue serving until no errors are committed by the serving player, at which time the serve will be transferred to the second server of the serving team.

Throughout the game, as the team has won more points than the opposing team, the serving team will change sides from right to left and left to right so that each team member on the return side has a chance to receive the serve from the opposing team.

These rules for pickleball serve only applies to the serving team, and the receiving team is also not allowed to switch sides.

During the course of a game, if the serving team makes another fault and fails to follow the rules for pickleball serve, they remain in the serving position and pass the ball to the receiving team in order to resume the game.

In the same way, the player on the right serves first, and this sequence is repeated throughout the duration of the game, by the pickleball rules serving.

Make sure you stand behind the baseline with both of your feet together. If your foot hits the baseline at any point during your serve before the paddle makes contact with the ball, then it is considered to be a fault.

Regardless of whether the ball touches the opponent’s sidelines, their center line, or their baseline, it is still considered in, while if the ball lands into the kitchen zone or touches the line that divides the non-volley zone from the volley zone or goes beyond the court marking, then it is considered a fault.
